It’s been a very long time since I took more than two consecutive days of vacation and I’ve decided it’s time to rectify that issue. So starting Friday, I shall unhinge and cast off the shackles of corporate bondage and enjoy a week of freedom – freedom that I will use to do little more than watch Mythbusters and consume much junk food.
What? No. No, I’m not going to Hawaii or Amsterdam or anything like that. Those things require money and I sort of don’t have any (and what little I do have is going into snacks and Pay-Per-View). Fancy vacations also require energy and I doubt I’ll have much of that left after Thursday.
See, working in a deadline-oriented industry, the process of preparing for a weeklong absence is nothing short of brutal. This is because in addition to doing my regular work, I’m professionally obligated to complete whatever projects have been given deadlines that fall on my upcoming days off. The task is further complicated by the simple fact that everything a designer creates must be proofed and approved before being finalized. And because so many people are included in the approval process, what takes me a day to design can take several days to get approved. Then it’s a matter of getting the copious marked-up changes done and the final product produced in the seven seconds that remain.
The point of all this is that I am anticipating the day after tomorrow the way I’m sure a Singaporean prisoner anticipates a caning. I'll be able to sit down immediately afterward and won't have to live the rest of my life with massive wads of scar tissue across my ass cheeks, but still.
